The job

A long room, one pattern.

We laid 57 m² of V4 Seashell Oak strip herringbone, fully bonded, and finished it with a coat of maintenance oil.

The blocks are 70 mm wide and 490 mm long, 11 mm engineered oak, brushed and UV oiled in a natural colour at the factory. The herringbone runs the length of the through lounge to the French doors, and on through the doorway into the hall.

What went underneath, and on top

Sealed, bonded, oiled.

01 · Sealed

The subfloor was sealed with a liquid damp-proof membrane (DPM), a coating that stops moisture coming up into the wood and the adhesive.

02 · Bonded

The herringbone was fully bonded with Bona R848, a hard-elastic adhesive that holds the floor firmly while allowing for the wood's natural movement.

03 · Oiled

Once laid, the floor was given a coat of Cinanova maintenance oil over the factory finish.

Close up

Brushed, UV oiled natural

Brushing wears away the soft grain so the harder grain stands slightly proud. UV oiled means the oil was cured under ultraviolet lamps in the factory.

Cut round the pier

Where the two halves of the room meet, the blocks are cut round the base of the pier and the pattern carries straight through.
