The job

One line of points, front to back.

The old floor was solid bamboo. A leak in the kitchen made the boards cup and separate, so it came up. The screed underneath was made good and left exposed to dry out for about a month before we went back in to test the moisture level.

We then supplied and fitted 37 m² of VitaStyle chevron in #114 Spiced Oak, Select Grade: 125 × 485 mm blocks, 15 mm thick with a 4 mm oak wear layer. It runs from the hall at the foot of the stairs, through the lounge and kitchen, to the dining end and the garden doors.

The base

Dried, tested, sealed, glued down.

After the screed had dried out for about a month, we tested the moisture level and coated it with Bona R540, a one-part polyurethane liquid damp-proof membrane (DPM) that stops moisture coming up into the wood and the adhesive.

Every block is fully bonded: glued to the subfloor across its whole underside with Bona R848, a hard-elastic adhesive that holds the floor firmly while allowing for the wood's natural movement.

Questions about this floor

Q&A

Is a chevron floor glued down?
This one is. Every block is fully bonded to the subfloor with Bona R848, a hard-elastic adhesive.
What goes under a glued-down chevron?
Here the screed was left to dry out for about a month after the old floor came up. We tested the moisture level, then coated it with Bona R540, a liquid damp-proof membrane (DPM), before the adhesive and the blocks went down.
Do the skirting boards have to come off?
On this job they did. The old skirting came off, the floor went down, and new skirting was fitted to cover the expansion gap.
Can chevron run through a hall and into the next rooms?
Yes. Here it runs from the foot of the stairs, through the lounge and kitchen, to the garden doors.
